Carbon Literacy For Businesses
Climate change is widely recognised as one of the greatest, and most urgent, challenges facing humankind.
This challenge has been recognised internationally, and within the UK. This course will give you an overview of the basic science of climate change as well as an understanding of the actions required by governments, businesses and individuals in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and set us on a path towards a more sustainable future.
Course Structure
In addition to completing some self-study materials, you will also be asked to attend one full day 9.30am – 4.00pm. The course structure outline is as follows:
Pre-Course Self-Study
(Note: this will be set one week before the training)
Introduction to Carbon Literacy
- The basic science of climate change
- Introduction to carbon footprints
- Introduction to climate equity and fairness
- Introduction to a zero-carbon world
Low carbon action audits

Morning session
- Introductions
- Recap of self study (Introduction to Carbon Literacy)
- The Greenhouse Effect
- The Greenhouse Gases
- International Carbon Footprints and Climate Equity (quick quiz and presentation)
- UK Consumption (presentation)
- The Carbon Footprint of Food (breakout group exercise and discussion)
- The Carbon Footprint of Travel (breakout group exercise and discussion)
- The Urgency of Taking Action (presentation)
- Imagining a zero-carbon world (breakout group with discussion and feedback)
Afternoon session
- Recap on self study 2 (low carbon action audits)
- The role for you and your business in delivering Zero Carbon (presentation)
- Spheres of Influence (breakout discussion)
- Communicating and Influencing Action on Climate Change (breakout group task)
- Taking Action and Making Commitments (presentation and Q&A)
- You will have time at the end of this session to start to complete your evidence forms and ask any questions you have about getting certified.
The Training and the Trainer
The course has been adapted to ensure local relevance by the West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges. The course is supported and accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project. The training will be led by a WYCC Carbon Literacy Project Certified Trainer.
Certification and cost
The cost of this course is £150 and includes your certification from the Carbon Literacy Project. You can book and pay for your course on the Luminate Education Group online store.
