Award in Environmental Responsibility in the Workplace Level 1

This qualification has been produced with educators and employers to increase awareness of environmental sustainability in relation to the workplace.

This qualification has one mandatory unit that will help learners to gain the knowledge of sustainable business practices and how they can contribute and will be delivered over two days at Shipley College.

The course will broadly cover:

Understand the scope of environmental impacts generated by business
Identify some of the key environmental impacts of business and the linkages between them

To include:

  • Pollution (including air, water, land, noise, odour)
  • Resource use and depletion
  • Waste

Explain why impacts can be direct or indirect
Explain what carbon emissions are and appreciate that they are just one of the environmental impacts of a business

Understand what climate change is
Describe what greenhouse gases are and have a clear sense of where they come from
Explain how increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is leading to climate change
Describe the relationship between climate and weather

Know the importance and urgency of reducing carbon emissions from business
Identify some of the principal global impacts of climate change
Explain how climate change is affecting the UK and identify some of the principal projected future impacts
Identify some of the business risks and opportunities presented by climate change
Explain why businesses can only be environmentally responsible with the support and help of staff

Understand some of the main business responses to environmental challenges
Describe what an environmental management system is
Describe what a business carbon footprint is
Outline what the global movement towards net zero carbon is

Understand the roles that an employee can play in environmental and carbon management
Outline how you would begin to understand the scope of business impacts
List some of the ways in which workplace behaviour might contribute to better environmental and carbon management
Describe the potential role of employees in influencing others to improve environmental management

There is no exam for this qualification, but learners will be assessed during the course.

Progression
On completion of this qualification learners will be prepared to progress to in a range of qualifications including the Level 2 Award in Understanding Business Responses to Environmental Challenges.
